March 2023

Band Families,

Happy Music in Our Schools Month! Each year, March is set aside to celebrate the wonderful opportunities music brings within schools. It is fitting that we have concerts celebrating the students artistry, growth, and dedication to music. Here is some more information on our performances this month.

All Lakeville Jazz Concert (jazz band): This concert we share with the three middle schools and Lakeville South. The concert begins at 7:15 (note the time). Call time is 6:45.

Almost Spring Concert (all bands): Our main mid-year concert will be held in the Lakeville North auditorium on Thursday, March 9. The concert will begin at 7pm. Concert Band (9th) will need to be in the auditorium ready to play at 6:00. Symphonic Band will need to be in the band room ready to play at 6:30. One new addition to this concert will be several percussion ensembles. We will closing the concert with a rockin’ performance by the jazz band in the commons. I encourage you to stay and listen.

*Please review the concert dress guidelines here

South Suburban Conference Festival (Symphonic Band): The SSC festival is our conference festival where we have the chance to perform for and listen to the other bands in our conference. We also have the opportunity to work and learn from a guest clinician. This performance takes place at Shakopee High School on FRIDAY, March 17 at 1:25. We should be back to LNHS around 3pm.

Summer Marching Band: More information will be sent out on Summer Marching Band in April, but I wanted to pass along a tentative schedule so you can get dates on the calendar. Also on the tentative schedule is the dates for our Fall Marching Camp. After the conflicts with sports try outs last year, I worked with the Activities Director to come up with a solution, which is to hold our fall camp the week before sports tryouts. This gives us more flexibility with spaces and schedules. Since we are holding camp earlier, we also have several Monday dates that we will meet before school begins.

Tentative Summer Band Schedule

Lettering: Students can still letter in band! In the past most points were earned attending pep band games, but many students have been earning points by attending outside concerts. You can find the lettering form on lnhspantherband.com/resources . Lettering forms are due April 30.

Leadership positions: Student leadership is the backbone of the LNHS band program. Students on the leadership team have a chance to get to know your fellow bandies more and work to create the best band experience for everyone. Any of the current leadership team would be happy to talk to you more about being a leader in the band. You can find more information, as well as the leadership application form here: lnhspantherband.com/ensembles/#leadership-team .Applications are due March 29 and we will begin interviews soon after Spring Break.

Be Bold, Be Brave, Be Kind,

Dr. Wanken
