How to Be a Band Parent

Congratulations! Your son or daughter has decided to be a member of the amazing Lakeville North Panther Band. You should be proud! This group has a long history of tradition and excellence and fun. They are going to work hard, meet many new people and have a lot of fun.

That’s great for the kids, but now you are probably thinking to yourself, “What is my role as a band parent?”  Below are some hints to help get you through each season of band.

SUMMER MARCHING BAND

  • Summer Marching Band is an opportunity for incoming and veteran band members to come together, bond, and prepare for the summer parade and fall football seasons.
  • Summer Band typically runs from mid-June to late July and includes 5 to 6 parades, including a 4th of July parade and the Pan-Prog parade. Practice days start early, be sure your child gets plenty of rest and eats a good breakfast. ALWAYS send a water bottle to practice and parades.
  • The uniform for summer band include the summer band polo (these are ordered when your student registers for summer band in the spring), black dress pants (no leggings), tall black socks and black dress shoes that have a stacked heel. Shop the men’s department (even for the girls). The dress shoes will be used for fall marching band, too.
  • Go to the parades and cheer them on. Your child will claim to be embarrassed as you scream their name, but we all know they secretly love it.
  • Get Involved! You can do things like chaperone a bus to a parade or help out at the ice cream social.

FALL MARCHING BAND

  • Fall Marching Band begins with Summer camp in late August. Camp runs one week, Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 5 pm, and is the best time for the entire Panther band to prepare for fall marching band.
  • Band uniforms are distributed to all members in August. Uniforms will be fitted during distribution and the pants typically need to be hemmed. Yes, the pants are supposed to be short. When they have their dress shoes (from summer) and spats on (part of the uniform), the hem of the pants should be at the second from the top snap of the spats.
  • They will need suspenders for the uniform. Wal-Mart is a great place to get them.
  • There are several opportunities to buy LN Panther Band spirit wear. Watch for the emails.
  • Go to the football games early. You will want to watch the band march down to the field from the school. They are impressive!
  • At halftime, it’s ok to kindly ask other spectators to sit down. It’s your child’s time to shine.
  • There is an indoor Marching band concert in late November in the main gym and it’s awesome!
  • Uniforms are returned to the band room in early December.
  • Get Involved!  You can do things like help adjust uniforms before games, work a concession stand (these are a lot of fun), help out with a fundraiser or sell goods at the indoor concert bake sale.

WINTER CONCERT BAND/PEP BAND

  • When the Marching band season ends, the band switches over to the winter Concert Band and Pep Band.
  • Students are required to attend a certain number of pep band events (Dr. Wanken will communicate this to the students). Your child will need to purchase the official band sweatshirt as part of the uniform for any pep band event. They can also wear their summer band polo, but it is chilly in the hockey arena, so layer up.
  • Concert band is the time to sit back and really appreciate the musical talents of these kids. They always play incredible music. There are concerts in the winter and in the spring.
  • Get Involved! You can chaperone a bus to state playoff games, help out with a fundraiser, or work a concession stand.

The absolute best thing you can do is get involved. Your kids are going to make lots of friends through the band, but you will meet lots of really cool parents, too. There are many opportunities to become involved. Come to the Band Booster meetings to get more information. We would love to meet you!

Hopefully this has answered some of your questions. Please don’t hesitate to email the Band Boosters if you have any others or are ready to become involved: lnhspantherband@gmail.com.
